VA Housing Grants for Disabled Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides disability housing grants to help service members and veterans with severe service-connected disabilities purchase, build, or modify a home to live independently.

Key VA Housing Grant Programs

Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant: Designed for veterans with severe mobility-related disabilities (e.g., loss of use of both legs, certain blindness, or severe burns). Grants cover constructing a barrier-free home, buying an adapted home, or remodeling an existing property. Maximum grant: Up to $126,526.
Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) Grant: Intended for veterans with specific qualifying conditions such as loss of use of both hands, severe respiratory injuries, or specific burn injuries. Used for targeted modifications like widening doorways, adding ramps, or upgrading safety features. Maximum grant: Up to $25,350.
Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant: For eligible veterans who are temporarily residing in a home owned by a family member. Maximum grant: Up to $50,961 (if SAH-eligible) or up to $9,100 (if SHA-eligible).
Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant: Provides funding for medically necessary home improvements (e.g., roll-in showers, entrance ramps) regardless of service connection, though service-connected veterans receive higher limits. Maximum grant: Up to $6,800 (50%+ service-connected) or up to $2,000 (non-service-connected).
