Moving later in life often comes with different priorities than a typical cross-town move — less rushing, less heavy lifting, and more flexibility to work at a manageable pace. PODS, short for portable on-demand storage, is built around exactly that kind of flexibility. According to PODS' own explanation of how the service works, the company delivers a container directly to a driveway, lets the customer load it on their own schedule, then transports it to the next destination, whether that's across town or across the country.

How the Process Actually Works

Rather than coordinating an entire move around a crew's schedule, as is common with full-service movers, PODS lets someone load a container over several days if needed. Thirty days of storage are built into every move at no separate charge, giving plenty of room to pack thoughtfully rather than rushing to beat a deadline. For anyone who doesn't want to handle the physical loading themselves, PODS can also refer customers to local packing and loading assistance, along with vehicle transport services if a car needs to move separately.

Container Sizes and What Fits

PODS offers three primary container sizes: 8-foot, 12-foot, and 16-foot, according to PODS' sizing guide. The 8-foot container generally suits a studio, dorm room, or a lightly furnished one-bedroom space, holding up to roughly 500 cubic feet and 4,200 pounds. The 12-foot option works well for a one-bedroom apartment with average furnishings, though it's limited to local moves and storage. The 16-foot container, the largest available, can typically handle a two-bedroom home or more, offering up to around 1,200 cubic feet and 5,200 pounds of capacity, and is available for both local and long-distance relocations.

For anyone unsure which size fits their situation, PODS provides a moving and storage calculator that gives a personalized recommendation based on the specific items being packed, rather than relying on square footage alone.

Combining Moving and Storage in One Step

A particularly useful feature for older adults navigating a transition, such as downsizing into a smaller home or moving between family members' homes, is that a PODS container can be stored at any point during the process, either at the original address or at a secure PODS storage facility, for as long as needed. This removes the pressure of needing a new home ready to receive belongings immediately, which can ease the timeline considerably during a more complicated move.

Space Requirements to Keep in Mind

A PODS container needs a reasonably sized outdoor area to be delivered, generally around 12 feet wide, 15 feet high, and 40 feet long, according to PODS' size guide. Confirming that a driveway or nearby space meets these dimensions ahead of time helps avoid a scheduling issue on delivery day.

FAQs

Do I have to load the container myself?
No, PODS can refer customers to local packing and loading assistance for anyone who prefers not to handle the physical work alone.

How long can I keep my belongings in a PODS container?
As long as needed — containers can be stored at home or at a PODS facility for extended periods beyond the standard 30 days included with a move.

Is the 12-foot container available for long-distance moves?
No, the 12-foot container is limited to local moves and storage, generally under 50 miles, while the 8-foot and 16-foot containers support long-distance relocations.

What if I'm not sure what size container I need?
PODS' online moving and storage calculator can generate a personalized size recommendation based on the specific rooms and items being packed.

Conclusion

For older adults facing a move, PODS' self-paced loading window and built-in storage flexibility can meaningfully reduce the pressure that comes with a traditional, tightly scheduled move. Confirming the right container size through PODS' calculator, and checking driveway space requirements ahead of delivery, are the two simplest steps to make sure the process goes smoothly from the start.
