Amex Centurion Lounges have built a reputation as one of the more sought-after airport lounge networks available through a credit card, but access has never been tied to age. It comes down entirely to holding the right American Express card and, in some cases, meeting specific spending thresholds. Here's how the system actually works, based on American Express's own benefits page.

Which Cards Qualify

Access to The Centurion Lounge, including Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge locations, is granted through American Express's Global Lounge Collection, a benefit tied to specific premium cards. According to a detailed 2026 guide from Roaming Cactus, the Amex Platinum Card, both personal and business versions, includes this collection, which also covers Delta Sky Club, Priority Pass Select, Escape Lounges, and Plaza Premium Lounges. The Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card and its business counterpart also carry Centurion Lounge access.

Eligibility is generally limited to the basic and additional cardholders on an account. Companion cards tied to the primary account are typically excluded from lounge access, even if they share the same card number.

Guest Access Rules

Bringing guests into a Centurion Lounge involves its own set of terms. Basic Platinum Cardholders can bring up to two guests per visit at no added charge, but only after spending $75,000 in eligible purchases within the current or prior calendar year. Below that spending threshold, guests are charged $50 per adult and $30 for children ages 2 through 17. All guests must be traveling on the same flight as the cardholder.

Once the $75,000 threshold is met, complimentary guest access typically remains active through the end of the following calendar year, giving cardholders a window that extends well beyond just the year the spending happened.

What Changed in July 2026

American Express tightened its entry rules starting July 8, 2026, according to The Points Guy. The update limits lounge entry during a layover to within five hours before a connecting departure, aligning Centurion Lounges with policies already common at other airport lounge networks. These changes apply to Centurion Lounges in the U.S., along with select international locations including London Heathrow, Tokyo Haneda, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Entry Requirements at the Door

Regardless of card type, entry generally requires presenting the eligible card, a same-day boarding pass, and identification. Standby or non-revenue standby passengers are typically not permitted entry unless they've been issued a confirmed seat assignment, and airline or airport employees may face restrictions on entry while in uniform.

FAQs

Is Centurion Lounge access based on age?
No, access is determined entirely by holding an eligible American Express card, not by the cardholder's age.

Do all Amex cards include Centurion Lounge access?
No, it's limited to specific premium cards like the Platinum Card and certain Delta SkyMiles Reserve cards, not the broader Amex card lineup.

Can I bring guests for free regardless of how much I spend?
Not automatically. Complimentary guest access for up to two guests requires meeting a $75,000 annual spending threshold on the eligible card.

Has lounge access recently changed?
Yes, as of July 8, 2026, entry during layovers is now limited to within five hours of a connecting flight, and guests must be traveling on the same flight as the cardholder.

Conclusion

Centurion Lounge access in 2026 remains one of the stronger perks tied to premium American Express cards, but it's built around card eligibility and spending activity rather than any demographic factor like age. With the July 2026 policy updates tightening guest and layover rules, cardholders planning to bring guests or use a lounge during a connection should double-check the current terms on Amex's official site before their next trip.
