Protecting a modern home requires a security infrastructure that is resilient, adaptable, and simple to operate. Traditional security frameworks often relied on landline connections and invasive, hardwired wall installations. Today, modern residential security centers on wireless, decentralized systems that homeowners can easily deploy, expand, and manage independently.

Frontpoint operates as a pioneer in this space, providing a self-installed, professionally monitored security system. Built on dual Wi-Fi and 4G LTE cellular backup connectivity with a 24-hour battery reserve, the platform ensures round-the-clock protection during physical wire cuts, power outages, or local internet disruptions.

This guide breaks down every core component of a Frontpoint security ecosystem. We examine how each device functions, step-by-step setup strategies, installation best practices, sensor integration, and maintenance protocols.

1. Central Hub & Control Panel Architecture

At the center of any Frontpoint deployment is the central control hub. Rather than relying on a single static keypad mounted by an entrance, Frontpoint separates the processing brain from the user interface. This design enhances system protection against physical tampering and intrusion attempts.

The Frontpoint Hub

The Frontpoint Hub serves as the central processor for the entire security network. It aggregates wireless Z-Wave and encrypted radio frequency (RF) signals from peripheral sensors and maintains continuous communication with the 24/7 professional monitoring center.

Dual-Path Connectivity: The Hub routes day-to-day signal traffic over your home Wi-Fi network. If internet connectivity drops, the system seamlessly transitions to an automated 4G LTE cellular connection.
Smash-and-Crash Protection: If an intruder breaches a door and physically smashes the Hub, an entry delay signal is transmitted to the monitoring station the instant the door opens. If the disarm code is not received before the timer expires, the monitoring station treats the disruption as an active alarm and dispatches emergency services immediately.
Battery Backup: An internal, rechargeable backup battery powers the Hub for up to 24 hours during electrical grid outages.
Built-in Siren: Features an integrated 100 dB acoustic siren to alert occupants and deter intruders upon entry detection.

Touchscreen Display Hub+ & Wireless Keypads

To interact with the Hub, homeowners use wall-mounted or desktop touchpoints:

Display Hub+: An upgraded, tablet-style touchscreen panel that provides a centralized interface for arming/disarming, managing smart home automation (locks, lights, thermostats), and streaming live video feeds from cameras.
Wireless Keypad: A touch-based keypad designed to be mounted near secondary entryways (e.g., garage entry doors, side entrances) or in master bedrooms. It lets users disarm the system using a personalized 4-digit PIN, trigger emergency panic alarms (Medical, Fire, Police), or check system status without accessing the main app.

2. Perimeter & Intrusion Sensors

Perimeter defense forms the primary line of protection in a residential security setup. Intrusion sensors alert the system before an intruder can enter the home.

Door/Window Sensors

Door and window sensors utilize a two-piece magnetic contact switch. One component houses the wireless sensor transmitter and attaches to the frame, while the smaller magnet mounts directly onto the movable door or window sash.

Mechanism: When the door or window is closed, the magnetic field keeps the internal circuit closed. Opening the entry point separates the magnet from the sensor by more than $0.75\\text{ inches}$, opening the circuit and transmitting an instant signal to the Hub.
Chime Features: When disarmed, opening a monitored entry point triggers an audible voice chime on the Hub (e.g., \"Front Door Open\"), providing awareness of household activity.

Motion Sensors

Frontpoint motion detectors use Passive Infrared (PIR) technology to monitor environmental thermal energy within a room.

PIR Detection Engine: Rather than scanning for motion visually, the sensor measures changes in ambient infrared radiation across its optical grid. When a warm body moves across distinct zones within its $90^\\circ$ field of view, the sensor trips an alarm.
Pet Immunity Settings: Frontpoint PIR motion sensors feature internal optical filters and software logic designed to ignore household pets weighing up to 85 pounds. By mounting the sensor at a recommended height of $6.5\\text{ to }7.5\\text{ feet}$, the thermal profile of a running dog or cat remains below the detection grid while human movement triggers an alert.

Glass Break Sensors

Unlike door contacts that require physical separation, Glass Break Sensors provide volumetric perimeter protection for areas with multiple glass panels, such as sliding patio doors, sunrooms, or ground-floor window banks.

Dual-Stage Acoustic Microphones: These sensors monitor room acoustics using internal microphones tuned to specific audio frequencies. They require two distinct acoustic signatures to trigger:
1. The low-frequency thud of an impact against the glass pane.
2. The high-frequency shatter sound of breaking glass within a $20\\text{-foot}$ direct line of sight.
Coverage Scope: A single properly positioned glass break sensor can protect all windows within a $20\\text{-foot}$ radius, eliminating the need for individual door/window sensors on every glass panel.

3. Environmental & Home Safety Hazard Sensors

A complete home protection strategy extends beyond physical security to guard against environmental threats like fire, carbon monoxide, and water leaks. Frontpoint environmental sensors remain continuously active, monitoring your home even when the main security system is disarming or turned off.

Smoke and Heat Detectors

Frontpoint smoke detectors utilize a dual-detection approach, combining photoelectric smoke sensing with thermal rise technology:

Photoelectric Chamber: Detects smoldering fires by measuring light scattered by smoke particles entering an optical chamber. This reduces false alarms caused by cooking vapors compared to older ionization detectors.
Rate-of-Rise Thermal Sensor: Triggers an immediate alarm if ambient room temperatures exceed $135^\\circ\\text{F}$ or rise by more than $15^\\circ\\text{F}$ per minute, providing early detection of fast-burning fires.
Automated Dispatch: When triggered, the detector sounds an internal horn, activates the Hub's main siren, and signals the 24/7 monitoring center to dispatch local fire services.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas produced by malfunctioning gas appliances, furnaces, or chimneys.

Electrochemical Sensing: Frontpoint CO detectors use electrochemical sensing cells to continuously measure CO concentrations in parts per million (ppm).
Life Safety Alerts: Upon detecting dangerous CO levels, the detector sounds an alarm and alerts the monitoring station to dispatch emergency responders.

Water and Flood Sensors

Water damage is one of the most common and costly sources of home property insurance claims.

Conductivity Contacts: Water sensors feature exposed metal probes on their base. When accumulating water touches the probes, it completes an electrical circuit, sending an instant flood alert to your smartphone and the central Hub.
Optimal Placement: Positioned in high-risk leak locations, such as next to water heaters, under kitchen sinks, behind washing machines, or near sump pumps.

4. Video Surveillance & AI-Powered Cameras

Frontpoint offers HD video surveillance cameras for indoor, outdoor, and entryway monitoring. These devices capture live and recorded footage, support two-way audio, and utilize edge video analytics to reduce false notifications.

Indoor Security Camera

Designed for interior common areas, hallway corridors, and primary living spaces:

Resolution & Night Vision: Records in 1080p HD resolution with infrared (IR) night vision up to $50\\text{ feet}$ in total darkness.
Two-Way Audio: Features a built-in speaker and microphone, allowing homeowners to communicate with family members or pets using the Frontpoint mobile app.

Outdoor Camera & Floodlight Camera

Built with weather-rated enclosures (IP66) to withstand extreme temperature ranges, rain, sleet, and snow:

Smart Video Analytics: Uses onboard processing to analyze motion patterns, distinguishing human movement, vehicles, and animals from moving tree branches or passing shadows.
Custom Perimeter Zones: Homeowners can configure virtual tripwires and perimeter zones. If a person lingers in a designated zone for more than a set time, the camera can illuminate LED floodlights, sound a warning chime, and send a push notification.

Wireless Video Doorbell

Replaces standard wired doorbells to secure the front entry porch:

Field of View: Features a tall $180^\\circ\\text{ vertical / }180^\\circ\\text{ horizontal}$ aspect ratio, allowing users to view visitors from head to toe and check packages left on the doorstep.
Touchless Chime & Analytics: Sends instant alerts when a visitor approaches or rings the bell, enabling live, full-duplex two-way conversations from anywhere.

6. Installation Best Practices & Setup Guidelines

Frontpoint systems are engineered for straightforward DIY installation. You can complete setup without drilling holes or running complex wiring throughout your home.

Installation Steps

Hub Activation & Placement: Position the Frontpoint Hub in a central interior room elevated off the floor (such as on a shelf or side table). Avoid placing the Hub inside metal cabinets or directly adjacent to large appliances that could cause signal interference. Connect the AC power transformer and wait for the status LED to confirm active network connection.
Door and Window Sensor Mounting: Clean door frames with rubbing alcohol to ensure strong adhesive contact. Peel the backing off the pre-applied 3M industrial adhesive strips and press the sensor body firmly onto the frame. Mount the smaller magnet onto the moving panel, aligning the alignment notches so the gap between the two pieces is under $0.75\\text{ inches}$ when closed.
Motion Sensor Placement: Mount motion detectors in room corners where an intruder would cross the sensor's field of view sideways, rather than walking straight toward it. Ensure the mounting height is between $6.5\\text{ and }7.5\\text{ feet}$ above the floor. Keep sensors pointed away from direct sunlight, air vents, and heating sources to prevent false thermal triggers.
Camera & Video Doorbell Setup: Pair cameras near your Wi-Fi router using the Frontpoint mobile app before mounting them outdoors. Mount outdoor units $8\\text{ to }10\\text{ feet}$ above the ground, angled downward slightly to optimize person-detection analytics.
