Recent independent laboratory testing, Consumer Reports, and Environmental Working Group (EWG) evaluations reveal significant issues among leading bottled water brands. Concerns range from high microplastic contamination and forever chemicals (PFAS) to heavy metals like arsenic and misleading municipal source labeling.

Key Concerns in Modern Bottled Water

Microplastic Contamination: Cheap single-use PET plastic bottles and caps shed microplastic particles directly into the water upon opening.
Processed Municipal Water: Several premium-priced bottled brands simply bottle municipal tap water using reverse osmosis with added artificial minerals.
PFAS & Heavy Metal Contaminants: Certain natural spring sources carry detectable trace levels of arsenic, manganese, or forever chemicals.
Environmental & Ethical Concerns: Brands extracting excessive water from drought-prone public lands face intense sustainability scrutiny.

Low-Rated Bottled Water Brands

Brand Name	Primary Reason for Caution / Low Rating	Source Type
Dasani	Heavy municipal tap processing with artificial minerals; high microplastic risk from cheap PET packaging.	Municipal Tap
Aquafina	Industrial reverse-osmosis municipal tap water sold at steep markups.	Municipal Tap
Starkey (Whole Foods)	Multiple Consumer Reports tests revealed elevated arsenic levels hovering near federal limits.	Spring Water
Peñafiel	Previously subjected to import alerts and production halts due to detectable arsenic levels.	Mineral Water
FIJI Water	High microplastic counts from rigid packaging alongside significant corporate environmental criticisms.	Artesian Well
Generic Bulk Brands (Great Value / Kirkland)	Rock-bottom commodity plastic bottles with minimal transparency and high macro-friction cap shedding.	Municipal Tap / Varies

3 Tips for Safer Daily Hydration

Invest in Glass or Stainless Steel: Switch from single-use PET plastic bottles to reusable glass, stainless steel, or aluminum containers to eliminate microplastics.
Use Home Water Filtration: Install an NSF-certified reverse osmosis or activated carbon filter on household tap water for clean water at a fraction of the cost.
Verify Third-Party Lab Testing: Choose brands that publish transparent annual Water Quality Reports detailing PFAS, heavy metal, and mineral counts.
